Barbosa first came to prominence playing for Vitória de Guimarães, joining Sporting Clube de Portugal in 1995-96, where he spent ten seasons. He contributed heavily to the capital side's 2000 and 2002 league titles. After retiring, he became Sporting's football director. Barbosa won 22 caps for the Portugal national team and scored five goals, from 1992 to 2002. He represented the nation at Euro 1996 and the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Gifted with suberb technique, Barbosa was considered a lazy player who failed to produce consistent series of games troughout his career, giving the feeling that he could have achieved higher levels in his career. Nevertheless, he managed to create some astonishing moments, being considered one of his generation greatest players. Loved and hated by the fans, one could never tell what he was going to do while on the pitch, yet he managed to be captain of Sporting for several seasons, always respected by his team mates. As a footballer, despite being slow and facing a lack of consistency, Barbosa had a great technique of passing, ball controll and dribble. He never feared going to 1-1 duels with the oposing defenders and he knew how to protect the ball with his body, which meant he didn't rellied only in sheer technique to pass trough the opposition.
