His career began in earnest after moving to Widzew Å(cid:0)ódź in 1974, helping to promote the club to the first division, in the process becoming a defensive stalwart, and after four seasons moving to Legia Warszawa. With the club from the capital, Janas would win two Polish Cups and gain a reputation as one of the best centre halfs in the country. For Poland Janas would be capped on 53 occasions, and of the few goals he managed as a footballer two came for the Polish National side, one was into an opponenets net and another unfortunately into his own. After his displays in the 1982 World Cup Janas moved abroad joining fellow compatriot Szarmach at Auxerre, by 1986 he would be awarded the title of the best defender of Ligue 1.
