It was with Ruch that Maszczyk had the best years of his playing career, over the span of 13 seasons he won the league title three times (1968, 1974, 1975) and the Polish Cup in 1974. He became Ruch's most popular player, loved by fans due to his ceasless work ethic and was said to have ''żelazne płuca'', 'iron lungs'. Made 310 appearences scoring 41 times. Tailed off his career with a move to French league runners-up Valenciennes FC in 1976, staying for three seasons before returning for one last season in Poland with CKS 1924 Czeladź. In the 1974 World Cup he was the only representative from then current Polish champion's Ruch Chorzów. For the tournament, Górski shifted Maszczyk to the holding midfield role, a position in which he would excell. For Poland Maszczyk has 36 caps with two goals, winning Gold and Silver in the Olympics of 1972 and 1976 respectively. Was awarded 'Master of Merit in Sport' in 1973, Gold and Silver Medals for 'Outstanding Achievements in Sports', and a 'Knight's Cross of OOP' in 1974. After his footballing days Maszczyk lost all contact with sport, and in 1981 when Poland was placed under martial law, Maszczyk was living in West Germany and working in a furniture factory.
