He combined rock hard defending with an insatiable appetite to attack the opponents' goal, with terrifying speed and power. This sort of play was uncommon in the 60's and simply unheard of in Poland. Anczok was afforded such ability by being a supreme athlete and he was noted to have had the endurance of a marathon runner and being especially fast. Indeed his remarkable early rise in football was in great thanks to his unbelivable physical conditioning; being a youth champion in long jump, high jump, 60 metre speed racing and in an old fashioned Polish ball throwing sport [Cannot translate properly as no modern equivalent exists]. Utilizing his natural atheletic talent he managed to break into the first team of Sparta Lubliniec at the age of 13! But would only see first division action after a transfer to Polonia Bytom in 1963, at this time he would establish himself as a stalwart at club level and soon internationally. Making his debut for Poland in 1965 at the age of 19, he would earn 48 caps (making 5 unoffical appearences), becoming an Olympic champion in the Munich games. Anczok's reputation as a quality defender was highlighted by several inclusions in World XI's, beginning with a tour of South America in 1966, where he effectively marked and subdued forwards such as Pelé, Garrincha, and Tostão in a game at the famous Maracanã stadium in front of 200,000 spectators. Was lastly part of a FIFA All Star squad in 1971 along with teammate Włodzimierz Lubański in a farwell match for Lev Yashin. It was at this time that perennial champions Górnik Zabrze beckoned, but Anczok would only manage to play through three injury filled seasons for a total of 38 games. With his footballing career decimated by injuries, Anczok would see out his remaining days in several foreign clubs; SAC Wisła Chicago, Chicago Cats, and Skeid Oslo were all stops before retirment in 1979. Anczok's early rise in football was equaled by his early decline, through the latter half of his career he was ravaged by severe injuries and struggled to be a constant force during a season, but when fit was gaurenteed a place, and even an unfit Anczok was sometimes thrust into matches to change the complextion of the team and overwhelm opposition with powerful surges coupled with expert defending. It was a fracture in his metatarsals that cruely left him unable to make an international comeback for the 1974 World Cup, after being forced by injuries into premature international retirment a year earlier. Honours Polish League: 1972 Polish Cup (Finalist): 1972, (1964) Olympic Gold medalist: 1972 *Karl Rappan Cup (Finalist): 1965, (1964) American Interleague Cup: 1965 Polish Player of the Year: 1966 *Would become the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 1995.
