A player of raw strength and pace refined by a touch of sophistication, all marshalled by magnificent footballing intelligence. Great in his linking with any team member, Lubanski would rotate himself all over the attack - come deep to build, or engage in his memorable dynamic runs surging right through teams at full steam straight at goal - or if needed could play the line causing havoc and panic to every defence. Would spend the best years of his footballing life with Górnik Zabrze. Played for the club from 1963 to 1975, scoring 228 goals in 315 appearances, and contested a Cup Winners Cup final in 1970 with them. Lubanski became such a goal threat on the pitch, that unfortunately for him, he also became a marked man, to be the recipient of brutal challenges, the cumulative effect of such prolonged abuse on his body manifested itself in a World Cup qualifier in 1973 against England where Lubanski sustained torn ligaments and a chipped bone in his leg from a seemingly innocuous challenge by a Roy McFarland. This injury threatened to end his career and It took two years before he was fit enough to play again at the top level, returning in the spring of 1975. It was not until 1977 that he donned the Poland shirt once more. When he did return to football it was with Belgian club K.S.C. Lokeren, with whom he would appear 192 times and score 82 goals over seven seasons. Was Poland's youngest ever debutant at the age of 16 and 188 days, even managed a goal. Was capped 75 times and scored 48 goals (national team record), which included five hat tricks, and two other matches with four and five goals each. Before Lubanski's tragic injury there was no flame that burned brighter, in his prime he was Poland's footballing son and was idolized not only by common supporters for his abilities but with his eloquent charm was apparently a massive attraction for young women. He was held in a complete polar opposite to his good friend Deyna who may have reached a higher level of global recognition, but due to his introverted nature was generally disliked in public light. Honours Polish League Titles - 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1971, 1972 Polish Cups - 1965, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971 Polish League's Topscorer - 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969 Polish Footballer of the year - 1967, 1970 Jupiler League Titles - 1980, 1981 Olypmic Gold Medal - 1972 UNESCO Fair Play award - 1978 Ballon d'Or (7th) - 1972 Trivia: --Started off as a keeper and was noted for his ability in handling shots off of older players. His father's fear of his son sustaining head injuries from strikers prompted a change in positions. --Speaks Russian, Czech, Dutch, French, German, English, and some Serbian. --Career total: 401 goals in 680 matches (Belgian and French domestic cup games not factored in). Video World Cup 1974 qualifier against England, Lubanski with a goal** (2:35), the injury (3:25) Second goal against Morocco (0:10), 1972 Olympics 1969/1970 Cup Winners Cup semifinal with A.S.Roma, second leg; Penalty (1:30) and goal from open play at (1:50). In the subsequent playoff match in Strasbourg another goal at (4:55)*** ** ''The second goal was down to Jacek Gmoch, our assistant coach, who analysed the opposition. He'd pinpointed a weakness in Moore's game. The defenders all passed the ball to Moore and left it to him to play it forward, but he tended to dwell on the ball. Gmoch told our forwards to expect this and to put immediate pressure on Moore. Lubanski had anticipated the pass to Moore and was on top of him straight away.'' -- Jan Tomaszewski *** The blackouts during the video are actual blackouts in the stadium with the power going out. The last minute of the highlights are priceless, with both teams level on aggregate (over three legs) the match is decided by the custom of the day, a coin toss, Górnik wins and the commentators let you know it.
