He would claim all the plaudits then for effectively stymying Sanon, Chinaglia, Edstrom, Surjak, Gerd Muller (only forward to score), Jairzinho and Kempes, of his duel with the Argentine, Zmuda completely disabled him from the game and it is said that was one of the best matches of his young and perhaps even his entire career. Though blighted by injuries and several major operations through his career, Zmuda was a model of consistency who was reknowned for flawless matches, and always managed to be fit if not for club then for important international fixtures. A natural athlete who had a dispostion for great physical conditioning, as a result was extremly difficult player to be moved by force, and tireless in his defensive duties. Zmuda had also perfected the art of the sliding tackle, being regarded as a masterclass in its execution. He combined these aspects with a great head on his sholdurs, which possesed both footballing brains and fantastic clearences, with being the definitive calm performer who was hard as nails but equally clean. Despite his natural quiet nature, Zmuda was regarded as an excellent organizer of the line. Of Zmuda's partnership with Pawal Janas in the 1982 World Cup, Brazil coach Tele Santana who managed possibly the greatest side never to lift the World Cup, stated after the torunament, 'If I had in my team a pair such as Janas - Å»muda, all the other nations would only need to concentrate on the fight for second place.' Name: Władysław Antoni ŻMUDA Club: Gwardia Warszawa Number: 9 (National team) Position: CB*, CWP Nationality: Polish Date of Birth: June 6, 1954 (age: 20 at the World Cup) Era: 1973-1974 Foot: R Side: B Length: 187 Weight: 84 kg Attack: 52 Defence: 84 Balance: 90 Stamina: 87 Top Speed: 75 Acceleration: 74 Response: 90 Agility: 75 Dribble Accuracy: 68 Dribble Speed: 73 Short Pass Accuracy: 71 Short Pass Speed: 74 Long Pass Acc.: 70 Long Pass Speed: 71 Shot Accuracy: 54 Shot Power: 80 Shot Technique: 59 Free Kick Accuracy: 60 Curling: 62 Header: 78 Jump: 83 Technique: 67 Aggression: 50 Mentality: 82 Keeper Skills: 50 Team Work: 80 Injury Tolerance: C Condition/Fitness: 6 Weak Foot Accuracy: 5 Weak Foot frequency: 5 Consistency: 6 *Sliding -- Known for his serious demeanour and no nonsense attitude, Å»muda was an exceptional young talent, who's ultimate potential was never realized due to a career plagued by severe injuries. Å»muda's greatest ability was in winning the ball, and was beloved by fans for his surgical dispossesion of onrushing forwards. He was so clean and precise in his tackling that it was joked in Poland, 'he could drive nails into wood with his bare feet'-- mógÅ‚by bosymi stopami wbijać w deski gwoździe (I think it loses something in translation). Å»muda was a late inclusion into Poland's 1974 team, only making his national team debut in a friendly against the Republic of Ireland in 1973 after qualification had already been secured. At 19 he had a glorious individual season with Gwardia, prompting for the calculating Górski to start him in defence along side GorgoÅ„ from the first match, Å»muda had only turned 20 a week before the World Cup started. He would go on to have a fantastic tournament culminating in winning the 'FIFA Best Young Player' award. For Poland Å»muda appeared a total of 91 times and scored twice. Was the first player to match Uwe Seeler's record of 21 World Cup matches, spanning four World Cups. This was later equaled by Maradona and Matthaus with the latter eventually setting a new record of 25. Strangely enough made more appearences for Poland than for any one club. -Claimed silver at the 1976 Olympics -One league title with Widzew Å(cid:0)ódź in 1981 Wladyslaw ZMUDA | 1973-1974 & 1981-1982 | PES Stats Database (Golden Era Backup)
