At Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina, then Yugoslavia, Vahid begun his career in the 1970s. The FK ,Velez Mostar one of the flagship teams of the Yugoslav championship, played a very attack-minded football. In that context, Vahid become as one of the best strikers in Europe. Vahid, however, was less successful in the national team, helmed by the regular players from big clubs from Serbia or Croatia. In accordance with the law at that period in Yugoslavia, Vahid must wait to have 28 years old and having performed his military to leave the country. He landed at FC Nantes in 1981. After an adaptation period Vahid was able to adapt to the team's game advocated by coach Jean-Claude Suaudeau. The french adventure is a success for Vahid, who not only became champion of France, also was topscorer twice (in 1983 and 1985).
