He was called El Sapo (Spanish ''The Frog'') because of his athleticism. He played the majority of his club career for Universidad Católica, but he had a spell in Argentina with Racing Club and finished his career in 1957 with Colo-Colo. He debut with Chile NT on 2 February 1941 in a match played againts the selection of Ecuador that finish with Chilean victory by 4 to 0, championship which won the ''premium performance and correction'' For the team played the 1950 World Cup and 6 America (1941, 1942, 1945, 1947, 1949 and 1953). Also holds the record for the player with the most games played in Copa America, with 34.
