Feline striker, very quick and at the same time elegant and powerful with a killer instinct, he was one of Portugal greatest scorers. Rui Jordão started to play football in Sporting de Benguela, where he was found by the Lisbon rivals - Sporting Clube de Portugal (SCP) and Benfica (SLB). Jordão injured himself on an athletism meeting where he was runner up in the 80m running and SCP hesistated, it was Benfica that grabbed him paying 30 contos (today its 150 euros). He arrived Lisbon portrayed as a great youngster and he lived up to that expectatives since on his first season as a pro he helped winning the doublette and he was summoned to the National Team, playing in the Taça da Independência in Brasil in 1972 scoring twice and being labeled the new Eusébio. He gained his importance in Benfica, winning several titles and becoming the top scorer of the 1975/76 Championship. He was signed by Saragoça in 1976 by 30000 contos (150 000 euros) but he didn't adapt to Spain and returned the next year. Despite Benfica's struggle to sign him again, this time was SCP that grabbed Jordão, who played there 9 seasons creating a legendary partnership with Manuel Fernandes, and winning 2 National Championships, 2 Portugal Cups and 1 Supercup. On his first 2 seasons at SCP he was chased by injuries, one of them a double fracture on his shimbone and (I don't know to translate the other bone to english but in portuguese is perónio) ''perónio'' on a hard tackle from Benfica's defender Alberto. Even so, he managed to recover and came to be once again the player he was before, reaching his peek and achieving a place in SCP history as one of their best forwards ever, scoring 187 goals in 279 official games while playing for SCP, and getting to be top scorer once again in 1979/80 with 31 goals, being very influent on the title won by SCP that season. He was also very influent on the 1981/82 season where he scored 3 goals against Benfica in a very important match of that Championship. In this season, Jordão and Manuel Fernandes were joined by António Oliveira playing behind the two of them and with whom they created a deadly offensive line. In the National Team he was also a permanent top choice, getting to play 43 times and scoring 15 goals, two of them in the semi-final of the Eurocup 1984 agains France where Portugal lost by 3-2 in the extra-time. He left SCP at the age of 34 retiring but he couldn't resist to the cries of his old friend Manuel Fernandes and he got to play again, this time on Vitória de Setúbal in the 1987/88 season, playing two more seasons and going 3 more times to the NT. After finishing his career, he became a painter and turned his back to football. http://www.youtube.com/v/6-xAssrHO-A (this video shows more misses than goals, but it's actually a very good video. And he celebrates goal really epic style.) http://www.youtube.com/v/IIA2p0rr ... re=related (Portugal-France Eurocup 1984: Jordão scores at 0.57 and 1.38) SCP All Stars : club-all-star-teams/sporting-clube-portugal-all-stars-t7374.html _________________ When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.
