Germany's most capped player of the 1930s (71 caps), Playing at fullback he was considered a tough tackler and was not scared of a challenge. Many consider him to be among the top 10 German defenders of all time. The DFB German Football Association ( German FA) list him in the top 20 best German footballers of all time, Some critics say he would have won player of the tournament World Cup: 1934 but at the time in Italy, Italian leader Benito Mussolini used the hosting of the World Cup to promote nationalism and his National Fascist Party and there was controversy surrounding the favourable treatment of the Italian team and its players. His home team was Fortuna Düsseldorf, where he worked as trainer after the war. during his playing career Düsseldorf dominated the division through the 30's won the Westgerman Championship in 1931, the German Championship in 1933 and made losing appearances in the national final in 1936 (1:2 to 1. FC Nürnberg) and the final of the Tschammerpokal, predecessor of today's German Cup, in 1937. The club was relegated in 1942 but made a prompt return to the top flight the following season.
