A supremely self-confident and disciplined individual, he settled quickly and began turning in the cool, classy displays which became his hallmark. By now United were a poor side, though, and after two seasons of travail they were relegated. Martin, by this time skipper, led them back up tat the first attempt, setting an exemplary personal example. But it was during the next five seasons that he reached his zenith, forming two effective partnerships, first with Brian Greenhoff and then Gordon McQueen. Martin was a firm rather than ferocious tackler and could read the game well, His positioning might not be as good as other United defensive legends, but his prime asset was his speed. If he made a mistake, which was not common, usually he could change gear and rectify it before opponents could take advantage. Undoubtedly passing was the weakest aspect of the Buchan game, but this rarely mattered as he tended to limit his distribution to the simple variety. Occasionally, when feeling more ambitious, he might give the ball away but there was always the insurance of that scorching acceleration. A man of strong principles, Martin upset some people with an uncompromising attitude which could border on the eccentric. But above all Martin Buchan will be remembered as one of those United players the fans could not bear to see missing from the line-up, in much the same way as Bryan Robson's absence was dreaded in later years. When he looked likely to miss the 1977 FA Cup Final against Liverpool, the prophets of doom were out if force. On that occasion, though not fully fit, he played - majestically - and largely snuffed out the threat of Kevin Keegan as the Red Devils took the trophy, and Buchan won player of the year for 1977 _________________ Love United Hate Glazer Martin BUCHAN | 1976-1977 | PES Stats Database (Golden Era Backup)
