Sporting at the time was playing a classic M-W formation. The 5 Violins played the offensive role and Travaços was the left interior (today it would be a role of support striker). His game was always considered as a mark of consistency and teamwork. He was considered, from the 5, the one who linked all their quality as individual players being the most versatile and all-around of the whole pack. In 457 games throughout 13 seasons on Sporting CP, Travaços scored 172 goals and attached his name to some of the best pages of Sporting History. His main skills as a footballer were his superior inteligence, being the playing leader of a team composed of extraordinary players, as said before he was the one who linked the attacks. He possessed good physical skills which allowed him the possibility to have a good mobility in the attacking moves. Being average small in terms of height, he was quick and used progression dribble which permitted him to gain position to deliver some deadly assists or even try the shooting. He was also very fast, he was a regular athlete in 100m sprint race at national level before enduring for his true passion - Football and Sporting CP. His technical portfolio was very complete for an attacker as he controlled the ball with precise accuracy, dribbled with unpredicted moves, his shootings were sharp and powerful, his passing proved to feed that team goal scoring desire and he had some changes of speed truly astonishing. He was the 1st Portuguese player to be summoned to FIFA Europe Squad, beating England 4-1 in 1955 in Belfast. From that moment on he became known as Zé da Europa (which could be something as ''Europe Jim'' translated for English). At the time, with few echoes from Portuguese football around the world (and even Europe), being summoned to this squad meant that still there were ones who knew how fantastic this player was. Another legendary Violin, probably the best one ever.
