Apesar de se destacar no alvinegro carioca, foi no rival Flamengo que o jogador marcou sua história no futebol. Pelo Botafogo, ainda como juvenil, Joel disputou 20 partidas, número suficiente para despertar o interesse de alguns dirigentes do Flamengo, que adquiriu o jogador junto ao rival em 1951. A saída de General Severiano para a Gávea, no entanto, foi conturbada. Após ser acusado de aliciar o jovem atleta de 19 anos, o Flamengo depositou aos cofres botafoguenses a quantia de Cr$ 100 mil (valor de um carro de luxo da época). Joel era econômico em tudo. Dava dribles precisos, apenas quando necessário, e fazia cruzamentos milimétricos. Alguns diziam, na época, que o seu jeito frio de jogar não combinava com a alegria e vibração do futebol brasileiro. Isso não o impediu de entrar na galeria dos melhores jogadores da história do Flamengo. Foram 111 gols com a camisa do rubro-negro. Das 404 partidas que disputou pelo time da Gávea, o ponta direita venceu 244, empatou 74 e perdeu 86. Conquistou o tricampeonato Carioca (1953,1954,1955) e o Torneio Rio-São Paulo de 1961. A trajetória na Seleção Brasileira começou nos amistosos preparatórios para a Copa do Mundo de 1958. Em um deles, no dia 14 de maio, frente à Bulgária, Joel anotou um dos gols na goleada do Brasil por 4 a 0. Mesmo começando a Copa como titular nas duas primeiras partidas da seleção, contra a Áustria (vitória por 3 a 0) e contra a Inglaterra (empate por 0 a 0), o ponta perdeu a posição para Garrincha, que começava a se tornar um dos maiores nomes do futebol brasileiro. Pelo Brasil, Joel realizou 15 partidas, de 1957 a 1961, e anotou quatro gols. O jogador ainda atuou pelo Valência, da Espanha, entre 1958 e 1961. Morreu por insuficiência cardíaca em 2003 e foi enterrado no cemitério São João Batista, no bairro de Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro.
