He was chosen by Portuguese sports newspaper Record as one of the best 100 Portuguese football players ever He was 14 when he tried to make it into the young squads of FC Porto and stayed in the club for almost 20 years. He was 18 when he made his debut in the main squad of the club, coached then by the Austrian coach Hermann Stessl. He was one of the main players of the squad in the season that led the club in 1983/84 to the final of the Cup Winners Cup and in 1984/85 to the Portuguese national title. He would be Portuguese champion 6 more times. He had various offers to leave the club after becaming European Champion in 1987, but refused and stayed in the club. In 1993/94, his physical strength started declining and he played 9 games in that season and only 1 in the following, making him Portuguese Champion, in a team coached by Bobby Robson. He left to Leça FC, believing he could still help, but he only played 4 games. He ended his amazing career after it. He made his debut for the Portuguese national football team in 18 November 1981 in Lisbon against Scotland, winning 2-1. Surprisingly, he wasn't in the squad for the Euro 1984 Portugal team.
