Playing as absolute first team choice for Benfica since the age of 18, he made his debut under coach Otto Glória against Pele's Santos, given the specific role of marking this god of football, in a game that ended with a 3 goal tie. In the early 80's Humberto Coelho was called twice for the european selection (playing first choice both times) in the same side were Beckenbauer, Platini, Zico, Keegan, Zoff, Rossi, Antognoni, Tardeli, Neeskens, Krol, Boniek, Blokhin, Falcão, Sócrates, Hugo Sanchez, Schumacher, among others. He still is the 26th defender with most goals ever, scoring 72 goals in his senior career. In September 1983, 33 yrs old by then, Humberto Coelho said goodbye to football, as a player, after a serious right knee injury, closing a brilliant 16 year career, becoming one of the legends of both Benfica and Portugal.
