Nicknamed El Cholo, he played as a striker or midfielder. He, with Teofilo Cubillas and Héctor Chumpitaz, have been some of Peru's most recognized football players. He also was a popular player in Peruvian football, having a movie biography. He was part of the Peru squad that won the Copa América 1975. He also competed for Peru at the 1970 and 1978 FIFA World Cup. He won the 1973-74 La Liga title with FC Barcelona, having like teammate to Johan Cruyff. He was famous for his great passing qualities and excellent dribbling ability, but his problems with alcoholism which curtailed his playing career. Club Career CD Municipal In 1968, Sotil made his debut at the professional level for Municipal in the Peruvian Second Division, which he helped to obtain promotion to the First Division that year. Sotil also played and scored the opening goal in an all-star match between Europe and South America in 1973 at the Camp Nou in Barcelona. Soccer greats such as Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer, Roberto Rivelino and Teofilo Cubillas participated in that game. The game finishes 4-4 and in Penalty kicks, America won 7-6. FC Barcelona In 1973 he was transferred to FC Barcelona of Spain, where he was the teammate of the star Johan Cruyff and Spanish notable players as Asensi and Rexach, among others. His life is compared to that of George Best, another footballer whose career ended due to alcohol. He currently works in Peru training youngsters. In the first round, draws with Ecuador 1-1 and Chile 1-1. In the second round, win to 4-0 a Ecuador and the final an victory to Chile 2-0, Sotil scoring one and the second goal was score by Oblitas with his assist. Sotil began the 1978 FIFA World Cup on the bench, appearing in two out of three group stage matches, and made his first start of the competition in a 3-1 win over Scotland, on June 03, soon draws the Netherlands 0-0, and win over with Irán 4-1. With 2 won and 1 draw, Peru pushed the Netherlands into second place in Group 4. Soon, expectations were high for Peru, however, With 3 losses, Peru finished at the bottom of their group went out in the second round.
