His performances were of such consistency and quality that Sepp Piontek called him up for his squad rendering Andersen one of the youngest to feature in the otherwise very rutined and experienced team full of senior players from top clubs all around Europe. But Andersen was not just a novice, having already won the UEFA Cup at the tender age of 18 with Anderlecht. Unimpressed, he earned himself a safe place in the squad and went to Mexico '86 as a reserve, appearing in Denmark's games against Uruguay, West Germany and Spain. Six years later, Henrik Andersen was now first-choice left back for Denmark as they were called up for the 1992 European Championships in Sweden as a replacement for the banned and civil war-torn Yugoslavia. As Denmark sensationally began progressing through the tournament, Andersen emerged as perhaps the best player of the entire team. Having moved to FC Köln in Germany, he was now at the peak of his career. But his run of increasingly brilliant displays from his left back position came to an abrupt and tragic halt when he in the semifinal against Holland went into a tackle with Marco van Basten and cracked his kneecap. Andersen was deservedly cheered more than any other player upon the team's triumphant return to Copenhagen following the 2-0 win in the final over Germany but 11 months of rehabilitiation awaited him. The rest of his career he was suffering from returning injury problems and decided to retire in 1998 at the age of 33 instead becoming a player agent. _________________ I am probably not going to be on this forum very much anymore - but send me a PM if you have any requst or enquiry and I will be notified.
