He was one of the Busby Babes, the young United team formed under manager Matt Busby in the mid 1950s, and one of eight players who died as a result of the Munich air disaster. There is limited footage of him, but Whoever played with him and who saw him play say that he was the best player they ever saw. Bobby Charlton described him as ''the only player that made me feel inferior'' Terry Venables claimed that, had he lived, it would have been Edwards, not Bobby Moore, who lifted the World Cup trophy as England captain in 1966.Tommy Docherty stated that ''there is no doubt in my mind that Duncan would have become the greatest player ever. Not just in British football, with United and England, but the best in the world. George Best was something special, as was Pele and Maradona, but in my mind Duncan was much better in terms of all-round ability and skill. Don Revie said ''You don't hear many professionals talk lightly of greatness because it is so rare, but that is what I saw in Duncan Edwards the first time I set eyes on him. He reached the same fabulous standard at left- half, centre-half, inside-left and centre-forward. He is the kind of player managers dream about.'' ''Duncan could do anything. If the goalkeeper kicked the ball downfield, he would be heading it, if there was a corner kick he would be knocking the ball in, and if someone was running through he would be the one to dispossess him. So many times he made the rest of us feel like pygmies.'' Looking at the stats: Positions: Could play anywhere on the pitch, attacking playmaker, authorative midfield General and a fantastic defender with great positional sense. Physical Attributes: One of the first real athletes in the game. Largely built but was said to possess limitless stamima, good pace and great strength. some people who saw Edwards say Wayne Rooney remind them of him in terms of build and how quick he is for his size. He was basically a Tank Dribbling: was said to possess superb ball control. Heading/Jumping: was rated as 'great in the air' especially winning the ball in the air from defensive positions Passing: was rated as a ''fine passer'' that could hit a 70 yard pass with ease, though I'll give Charlton the benefit of better passing overall. Shooting: was always well regarded for having an accurate and ''fierce'' or ''powerful'' shot Mentality: ran and chased players down like a gazelle. brave determined and a great leader. Many expected him to become England captain in front of Bobby Moore if it wasn't for his untimely demise Teamwork: The complete Teamplayer. _________________ Alan Hansen wrote: How come Liverpool games are on last at the moment?
