Hendry started his career as a striker but was converted to a centre-half when he moved to Blackburn from Dundee in 1987. In his early career with Rovers he showed on numerous occasions that he still had that strikers instinct, often venturing forward to finish off team moves with headers and surprisingly classy finishing. In the 87/88 season he contributed no less than 12 goals for Blackburn in the league, allbeit as they were lumbering in the old second division. After a short spell at Manchester City, where he proved he was capable of handling the english top flight, he returned to Blackburn off the back of being dropped from the team by then City boss Peter Reid. Upon his return he helped guide Rovers to the newly dubbed Premiership via the playoffs in his first season back at the club. Come the 1994/95 season, he was still an integral part of the Rovers back line and was a key figure in the team that were crowned champions of England after only three seasons in the top flight.
