He captained Brazil to victory in the 1970 World Cup and is a member of the World Team of the 20th Century and was named by Pelé as one of the top 125 greatest living footballers in March 2004. Carlos Alberto joined Fluminense at the age of 19. He made a name for himself in his first season, not only because of his great tackling and reading of the game, but also due to his outstanding ball control, dribbling and playmaking abilities, which were quite rare at the time for a defender. In 1966, he moved to Santos, where he became Pele's teammate. In 1974, he returned to Fluminense and helped the team capture two consecutive Campeonato Carioca championships. In 1977, he moved to Fluminense's arch-rivals Flamengo. A player of great technique, elegancy, and strong character, ''O Capitano Do Tri'' is considered one of the most complete right defenders ever to come out of Brazil. He was talented as a right back and central defender, and his attacking abilities were great assets for his teams. He had a great World Cup in 1970 where he was Brazil's captain. In the final match against Italy, he scored the fourth goal. It was the last and most memorable goal of that brilliant tournament, a thunderous finish to an outstanding collective play that symbolizes the dominance of Brazil during that tournament, and that is to this date one of the most replayed goals in television, an all-time World Cup highlight.
