During his club career he played for Sporting Cristal, A.C. Milan, Cagliari Calcio and Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras. He earned 37 caps and scored 11 goals for the Peru national football team from 1963 to 1972, and played in the 1970 FIFA World Cup, where he scored 2 goals and emerged a star with the team that reached the 1970 World Cup 1/4 finals losing 4-2 to eventual winners Brazil. He was an inspiration to the generation of players that won the Copa America in 1975 and appeared in two more World Cups in 1978 and 1982. He was Peruvian League Top Scorer in 1962 and 1963.
