It was a recognized forward of South America in 70's and early 80's. It' s with Carlos Valderrama leading exponents of the history of colombian football. He was the leader and referent of the Colombia national football team between 1972 and 1985, runner-up of the Copa America 1975 and dispute the qualify of Germany 1974, Argentina 1978, Spain 1982 and Mexico 1986. At club level played for Millonarios, Deportivo Cali and America de Cali, achieving 6 titles of the Colombian League and competing for the final 3 Copa Libertadores. Nicknamed ''Mr. Willy'', was noted for his excellent dribbling, skill, speed and good handling of both feet.
