William ''Willie'' Morgan was a tremendous winger who made his name at Burnley and then was feted like a pop star upon his arrival to the ageing great Manchster United side of the 60's. He had declined offers from Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, Leeds, and Celtic. The problem for the gifted Morgan is he was in the shadow of the great George Best though he often liked to point out he was just as good! His career turned in the early 70's when manager Frank O'Farrell moved him from flank to midfield. On the wing his dribbling skills and instant control dazzled, but as a wide midfielder his capacity for work and willingness to tackle aggesively gave him an extra demension. He was not a big goalscorer and sometimes his passing let him down, however as United began to slip in the early 70's towards eventual relegation, Willie was one of the most consistent performers succeding George Graham as captain and becoming close to mercurial manager Tommy Docherty who once proclaimed Willie Morgan to be the best winger in the world! By 1974 Morgan part of Scotland's World Cup side, had been at the forefront of United's charge towards the 2nd division title leading a team with likes of Martin Buchan, Stuart Pearson, Sammy McIllroy and Lou Macari in an exciting team that would appear in 3 out of 4 FA Cup finals between 1976 and 1979 and finish runners up once to Liverpool. Alas Willie would not see out that season, the emergence of Steve Coppell and a fall out with Docherty saw him leave at the end of the 1974-1975 season to return to Burnley. Willie Morgan was the bridge between a great united side and a good one but did not enjoy the fruits. Later he would a win a famous libel court case against Docherty.
