He was named the best player of SFRJ a few times and the first sports person of Belgrade. After Hajduk Lion, where he started kicking the football, he continued in Red Star’s youth, junior and was a member of the first team for full three years, also captaining the trophy winning generation. His debut for Red Star was on 19th of July 1972. in a summer league of champions match against Hajduk Split (3:1) and until 12th of December 1982 he played 497 matches (258 of which were first division matches) and scored 117 goals. He won 4 Championship titles (1973, 1977, 1980. and 1981.) and one National Cup trophy (1982). His first game for the national team was against Hungary in Belgrade (1:1) on 26th of September 1973.). All together he played 34 matches for the national team, his last being against Norway (1:3) in Oslo on 13th of October 1982. He took part in the World Cup 1974. in Germany and 1982. in Spain. He continued his football career as a coach for youth selections of Red Star. With his club he has won the National Cup (1996.), and went on as a coach of Radnicki Nis after coaching Radnicki from New Belgrade first. He was one of the coaching staff who spotted and coached Dejan Stankovic. He also worked in Minsk for a while. With the U21 national team he won the silver medal in the European Championship 2004. in Germany (final game against Italy in Oberhausen). If there is a big football star that in some strange way was “hidden by a curtain” than that must certainly be Vladimir Petrovic. For a series of years, first ace of Read Star team and a standard member of the national team he wasn’t able to celebrate a golden jubilee of 50 games in national uniform, just like Dragoslav Sekularac (what a wrongdoing). He was known as one of the most intelligent football players of the after war history. Everything that came from the master of football, something Vladimir Petrovic truly was, was turned into perfection. He only had two disadvantages. He was not quick and he was not of physically strong constitution. In his case everything was a question of technical virtuosity and a brilliant mind. He would find solutions that no one in the stand would be able to see. After him Dragan Stojkovic and Dejan Savicevic also possessed skills like his. He put special mark of his unequalled playing career on the second final match in the UEFA Cup, which was player on 23rd of Mai 1979. in Düsseldorf against Borussia Mönchengladbach (0:1), whose team contained Lienen, Vogts, a brilliant Dane Simonsen, but also the famous “twelfth man”, Italian referee, Michelotti. During the World Cup in Germany 1974. he was the youngest member of the national team, but he believed that he would carry the national flag in his generation within the next three or five years. That prophecy came true. He was a captain of Red Star for the full three years, the captain of the national team only four times, but the masterful games that he delivered are remembered more often. He was the inspiration of the win over Uruguay in Sarajevo 1980. (2:1), he single handily made sure the national team qualified for the World Cup in 1982. by being the hero of the match against Greece (2:1) in December of the previous year in Athens.
