When he arrived at FC Porto, was given as the “new Pinga”, thanks to the excellence of his left foot. But it was the manager Alejandro Scopelli that tamed the rebellion of the young player, pulling him to the defense, sometimes on the right, others on the left, and making him one of the great names in Portuguese football of all time. Courage, strength, endurance, character, courage: all this stated Virgílio to be the “Captain” which he came to be. And its debut in the National Team in February 1949, a devastating game of the 'squadra Azzurra, marked him forever. At that meeting, all its features were sublimated in spite of the voluminous defeat (1-4). And Virgílio Marques Mendes became forever known as the “Lion of Genoa”. If Benfica was a great passion of his childhood, the way he was rejected by Benfica would cause him a sorrow hard to forget. It was, perhaps, sign of good fortune. At FC Porto, the Hungarian Josef Sezabo was delighted with his suddenly and wilful style. Also in FC Porto he start as inside-left, in an urgent need that Porto had, at the time, to find another Pinga. But it would be as a right side back that he would win his place, completing about 350 games in Division I and 39 in the National Team, becoming the record most caped player till that time. After fourteen years at FC Porto, he ended his career as footballer, but remained connected to the club in various roles, even as main coach in the 1965-66 season, replacing the Brazilian Flávio Costa. _________________ ''My heart only has one colour: Blue and White!!
