He was for most of the eighties regularly circulating with Ole Qvist and Ole Kjær, taking turns being Sepp Piontek's first-choice goalie. But after Qvist and Kjær both had retired, Rasmussen was quickly usurped by an upcoming Peter Schmeichel who bursted on to the scene in those years. At Mexico '86, Rasmussen was starting against both Scotland and Uruguay as designated first-choice keeper Ole Qvist fell ill with a virus on the balance nerve. But two very unstable performances saw him benched for the last group game against West Germany and the following 1/8-final versus Spain, replaced by Lars Høgh. An embarassing farewell for Rasmussen who nonetheless was an apt keeper with his strength in his reflexes and agility although he lacked presence in the air despite his considerable frame. Rasmussen also travelled to EURO '88 as a substitute for Peter Schmeichel but after Denmark crashed out with three defeats, he found his time with the national team over.
