Signed by Bob Paisley just a few months after losing to Liverpool in the 1974 FA Cup final for NewcastleUnited. The midfielder cost £170,000 and in time went on to become an integral part of the fast, hard working Liverpool midfield alongside Souness, Kennedy and Case. However he started to really come into his own in the 1976-77 season when the reds had so many games to play. His touch was superb and vision even better. He started to play so well that he kept his place. His late darting runs from midfield meant he often popped up unexpected to score. He opened the scoring in the reds first ever European Cup win in 1977 in Rome. His form was rewarded with England honours and following the arrival of Graeme Souness in the centre of the pitch he went on to become an integral part of the team. He became so consistent that in 1980 he became the first man to win both the player player fo the year as well as the football writers award in the same season. His long-range shooting became a feature of his game to add to his vision and tactical awareness Many reds will remember McDermott for two spectacular goals. One won him goal of the season down at White Hart Lane when he hit a superb shot from the right side of the penalty box. The other coming in 1978 at Anfield in what many claim to be the greatest reds goal ever in one of their most complete performances. McDermott started the move in his own area and after great cross field passing he arrived in the box to head the ball past a helpless keeper. The goal epitmoised the team at the time. _________________ Alan Hansen wrote: How come Liverpool games are on last at the moment?
