A midfielder of notable technique and speed, Cubilas was part of the Peru national team that won the 1975 Copa America and reached the quarter finals of the World Cups of the 1970 and 1978. Cubillas scored 10 goals in two World Cups, something that had never been achieved before. Among his individual honours, he was voted ''South American Footballer of the Year'' in 1972, and in 1999, he was voted 48th best player of the twentieth century in a poll by the IFFHS.
