Elegant player with grace and imagination in the game. He easily rotated in attack, and therefore could score but also assist in numerous situations. He could easily find great solutions (pass, dribble, shot) in the hardest situations. He had his magic tricks that many players copied, like: special type of dribble* (you can see it in a video), calming the long pass ball that's coming towards him, with the top of his shoe and shot, back-heel pass (called Bobek's golden back-heel), fooling the opponents with his body dribble** (also can be seen in the video). He began his senior career with only 12 years in Croatian team called HŽK Derbi (registered for this team as a player with 14 years old). After the War he joins newly found club, Partizan Belgrade. Until Illés Spitz arrived for Partizan coach, he played as classic CF, and scored quite a number of goals (in first season 24 goals in 23 matches). Illés Spitz recognized his great potential and decided to put him on inside-forward position as game builder. It took more than a year to make this transformation, but it turned out to be the excellent move. Team gain superb playmaker, who was still excellent goalscorer. In this way, both Partizan and Yugoslavian national team gain excellent player, who could successfully play as inside-forward or pure CF. Takes a great coach (like Illés Spitz) to recognize that in one excellent goalscorer lies even better playmaker. Bobek won two silver medals in Olympic games, in 1948. and 1952. He played two World Cup quarter-finals, in 1950. and 1954. During his first year in Partizan he scored 9 goals in one league game, which is still unbeaten record. Puskas said that Bobek is one of the few greatest players of his time. Also Puskas said: ''Bobek's technique with the ball is unrivalled. I'm not a shame to admit, that I tried to copy him. How God-like that guy dribbled* and his back-heel pass was impeccable. He still is one of the most noble artists in football.'' Hungarian national team coach from '50s, Gusztáv Sebes, gave a statement (some years after Bobek retired) that Bobek was the best player in Europe, during 1950s. What he exactly said is, that he came to watch Partizan playing against Honved and to see who is better wing half, Čajkovski or Bozsik, only to find out that Bobek is the best European player. He ended his playing career in 1958, and stayed in football as a coach. During the '60s he won 3 championships with Partizan Belgrade and 2 with Panathinaikos. In 1995 he was named the greatest and most popular Partizan Belgrade player of all time. VIDEOS: Adobe Flash Player is no longer supported This video is recorded, when Bobek was 39-40 years old, and he's already retired (in that moment he was coach of Partizan Belgrade senior squad). Still, his speed and grace are amazing. * (2:29 - Bobek's showing his specific dribbling, which he first introduced in this part of Europe; the same one Puskas mentions in the quote) ** (3:03 - Bobek's showing his body dribbling) Stjepan BOBEK | 1948-1955 | PES Stats Database (Golden Era Backup)
