He was the lead player of Bayern Munich when they won the UEFA Champions League in 2001, in the final of which he scored a penalty in normal time and then another one as they beat Valencia in a penalty shootout. During the same tournament, Effenberg won also the UEFA Champions League Most Valuable Player for his elegant (and sometimes seemingly lazy) style of play.
