Raised in the city of Porto, we went to FC Porto youth system ending his youth formation on Salgueiros. He was part of the under21 team that reached the final of the Eurocup 1994. He was transfered to Sporting Clube de Portugal (SCP) in 1994 granting already a place on the starting eleven and scoring a goal on his debut against Farense, winning the Portugal Cup that very season and being summoned to the National Squad and to the Euro Cup. On the 30th April 1996 he had his glory night, when he scored 2 out of the 3 goals helping to win 3-0 over Porto in the Super Final Cup played in Paris. This time he was already one of SCP great symbols, charismatic and a symbol of the effort of a lion, like he was portrayed getting the nickname of Ricardo Coração de Leão (Lionheart Richard) and embrancing a strong relationship with the fans, specially the organized fans like Juve Leo. Reckless and rebellious, he saw his ascension being stopped after puinching the coach of the NT - Artur Jorge - being banned for one year and getting sold to Real Sociedad, where he stayed 3 years. Meanwhile he returned to the National Squad in 2000 being summoned to the Eurocup 2000, he played on the Championship won by SCP in 2001/02, but the painful injuries led him to cirurgery on his knees 4 times, but he recovered to play, portraying this effort with great determination, always characterist on his personality. He was part of the squad that reached the Uefa Cup final 2005, getting to play in 9 out of the 15 games and was elected as team captain after the leaving of Beto next season. He announced his retirement but after being sent off on the end of the championship, he went back on his decision but Paulo Bento wasn't counting with him anyway, and therefore he ended his career on Standard Liege, where he wore shirt 76, as a praise to SCP fans Juve Leo. In 2008 he returned SCP to the Comunication department. He played 228 times for SCP, scoring 49 times. On the NT he played 45 times and scored 10 times (10 games on this season, 1 goal). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvY_vqxOAP0 (good highlights) SCP All Stars : club-all-star-teams/sporting-clube-portugal-all-stars-t7374.html _________________ When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.
