He was of Senegalese descent and became the first coach of the Senegal national football team. It was the captain of the French national football team during the 1938 World Cup. He was nicknamed ''l'Araignée noire'' (the Black Spider) because it had long legs and was a great tackler. He was a champion of school France of the high jump in 1929 and his jump was very useful for heading game. In cause of his great stamina, he was nicknamed ''Trois poumons'' (Three Lungs).
