A tremendously offensive left back with good effort, he had an unmistakeable style of playing with his socks down. Club career Gordillo's parents were from Seville, and he moved there when he was just a few months old. He grew up in a famous neighborhood in the city called El Polígono de San Pablo where he started playing football in a kid's team, Unidad. After nine professional seasons at Real Betis, being named the country's footballer of the year in 1979-80, Gordillo moved to Real Madrid in 1985-86, winning the UEFA Cup in his first season (scoring in the final) and forming a dreaded fullback partnership with José Antonio Camacho during four seasons. In 1988-89's Spanish cup, he scored the final's only goal against Real Valladolid. In 1992, Gordillo returned to Betis, aged 35, helping the Andalusians return to the top flight in his second year and retiring, also in the second division, after one final season with neighbours Écija Balompié. International career Gordillo earned 75 caps and scored three goals for the Spanish national team from 1978 to 1988, his debut coming on March 29, a friendly 3-0 win over Norway, in Gijón. He went on to represent the country in two World Cups (1982 and 1986) and three European Championships (1980, 1984 (where Spain were runners-up) and 1988).
