Everybody gave applause to this living symbol of Brøndby IF, as he ran on to the pitch on Brøndby Stadion to carry out his last 90 minutes of his footballing life where it all had been taking place. Through his career, Per Nielsen had always been a sure regular in the central Brøndby defense and though one defensive partner after another came and went, Nielsen was always certain to remain at the club. After goalkeeper Mogens Krogh's retirement in 2003, it was also with the captain's armband stuck firmly on his right arm. As a player, Per Nielsen slowly refined his game during the years to at the age of 31 being one of the finest stoppers to grace the pitches of the Danish Superliga. He culminated in 2004/2005 where he as captain led the team to The Double while partnering a young Daniel Agger in the central defense. From here, his decline slowly began to set in as the team and club experienced a similar downwards spiral. No one liked to admit it but it was enivitably clear that Per Nielsen no longer was the right man to lead Brøndby IF on to a new era. Always putting the club before himself, Per was quick to acknowledge this fact himself and first willingly gave the captaincy to Stefan Gislason, then retired to the bench in favour of new defensive leader Max von Schlebrügge and at last retiring in the Summer of 2008. _________________ Don't know when and if I will be back...
