Despite being born in Dendermonde, Belgium, he represented Wales at international level, making 13 appearances for his adopted country. Van Den Hauwe was one of the toughest left backs in the league probably only Pearce was harder in the tackle. He formed an excellent foil for his left midfield teammate Kevin Sheedy and was a core member of Howard Kendall's excellent Everton side of the mid 80's. The major honours of his club career were helping Everton win the League title in 1985 and 1987 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1985, and winning the FA Cup with Tottenham in 1991.
