His main quality was always his leadership, he formed good partnerships and was instrumental to the success of Ukraine. His tackling is also one of his key assets and was a decent ball winner. He was also rather versatile, he was originally signed as an RB for the ageing Lee Dixon but also seemed to play at CB, probably as competition for Tony Adams and Steve Bould. He can start attacks from defence and is rather comfortable on the ball. He did however lack mobility, especially in the later stages of his career. He wasn't nimble and was very slow, but his fathoms of experience more than made up for it. He was nicknamed ''The Horse'' because of his tendency to gallop up- field.
