He retired in 1998. He is considered to be one of the best soccer players from Bosnia ever. His professional playing career started in FK Željezničar in 1979. He played more than 300 games for the club. He was part of a team that managed to reach the UEFA Cup semifinals in 1985. under the guidance of Ivica Osim. In 1987, he moved to French side FC Sochaux-Montbéliard. He stayed at the club until 1996. He collected more than 350 appearances for FC Sochaux in various competitions. After that, he played for Nîmes Olympique (1996/1997 season) and Swiss side Etoile Carouge FC (1997/1998 season) before he announced his retirement in summer of 1998. He also played for the national teams of two countries. He played for Yugoslavia junior, olympic and U21 team. He was the captain of U21 national team that won inaugural European Under-21 football championship in 1978. His debut for Yugoslav national football team finally came in 1983. He collected 54 caps and scored 4 goals. If we consider all Yugoslav selections, he is the all-time record capped player. After 1984/1985 season Baždarević gain great recognition, when he was elected in to the Europe's Best XI squad. After Bosnia-Herzegovina gained independence in 1992, he started playing for his country. Because of a war, Bosnian national team played only unofficial matches until 1995, so he only managed to play two official games in which he was a captain. Beside his extraordinary football skills, he will be remembered because of one more thing. In 1989, during the 1990 FIFA World Cup qualification game between Yugoslavia and Norway, he spit at the Turkish referee Yusuf Namoglu. Because of that incident, he missed the 1990 FIFA Wold Cup on which he would surely play an important role for his team. His coaching career started in FC Sochaux-Montbéliard where was an assistant and also a coach of reserve squad. His first job as a head coach was at the FC Istres. He guided the club to its biggest success - entering the French Ligue 1 in 2004, which secured him a best Ligue 2 manager of the year award. In 2005 he took over Tunisian Étoile Sportive du Sahel. He have reached the African Champions League final with the club. He is currently employed as a head coach of Qatari Al-Wakra. He was also a candidate for the place of Bosnia-Herzegovina national coach, but Fuad Muzurović get the job instead.
