He was renowned for his strength and tough tackling. He received 58 caps with the Brazilian national team, between March 1991 and September 2001, without any goal, being part of the squad who won the FIFA World Cup 1994. As Deportivo de La Coruña player he won 1 Liga, 2 Copa del Rey and 2 Supercopas in Spain, participating five times in Champions League competition, reaching semifinals in 2003–2004. In 1991 he won Bola de Ouro ''Golden Ball'' by the authoritative Brazilian magazine Placar to the best player in the Brazilian National Championship. It is practically the equivalent to a Footballer of the Year award ho won it along with players in history like Elà as Figueroa, Zico and Romario. He was considered the best defender in the world in the year 1994 and he ranked 9th best player in the world in the same year along with Franco Baresi and Jürgen Klinsmann.
