His position was centre-back. He was powerful in the air and neat on the ground and great at clearing crosses with his head. He was an integral part of Bill Nicholson's famous The Double winning Tottenham team of 1960-61, which went on to retain the FA Cup in 1962, and win the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup 1962-63. Norman began his career at Norwich City, and played 35 league matches for the Canaries between 1952 and 1955. He signed for Tottenham Hotspur in November 1955 for a รข‚¤18.000 transfer fee, that also included the return transfer of Irish international striker Johnny Gavin to Norwich. Norman played his first game for his new club against Cardiff City, and stayed at White Hart Lane until 1965, making 411 first-team appearances and scoring 19 goals for Spurs. He was the star of the defence, playing alongside Dave Mackay who inspired him. Maurice helped organise Peter Baker and Ron Henry at full back and was himself inspirational to them with his effort and skill. He also helped the attack by scoring four goals in the Double season and by hardly missing more than six games in the next three seasons. This was a remarkable feat considering the huge physical effort and strong tackling aspects to Maurice's game At international level, Norman made 23 appearances for England, including in the 1962 World Cup. He was also a member of the England squad at the 1958 World Cup, but did not play. Maurice broke his leg playing for Spurs against an Hungarian Select XI on 18 November 1965, shortly before Sir Alf Ramsey was to announce his 1966 World Cup squad, ruling him out of the tournament and effectively ending his international career. Eighteen months later owing to complications his leg had to be re-broken, and he was forced to watch England win the World Cup while in plaster. Maurice never played again for Spurs. This was such a shame, because he was playing at the top of his game at the time and would have gone on to even greater heights. Hugely influential, Maurice Norman was a colossus, a leader of the defence and effective in the air and tidy on the ground. No one would be able to deny his injury was a great loss. Only Mike England, Sol Campbell and Ledley King have come near to his importance to Spurs since. Maurice NORMAN | 1960-1961 | PES Stats Database (Golden Era Backup)
