It's also interesting the fact that they allways reached the knock-out stage, except for France 1998. Nicknamed das Kampfschwein (The Fighting Pig), Wilmots was that kind of player that hold their breath until ''the fat lady sings'', never giving up in the field as if it was a battle, rather than a simple football game, what led to an endless chain of injuries, wich he always overcomed. One of his main assets was his huge and imposing physique, a strong player with a strong will to hold on to the last minute of game, it's also interesting his abilitie to perform sureal shots (sidekicks, lobs and so on). At clubs he wasn't so succesful, since he played most of his career in his homeland. However, he was constantly watched and called by Spanish and Italian team, but he chose Schalke 04 to show himself to the World. Once more, he didn't dissapoint the fans, who took him as one of their one, and stablished him as a true leader at Westfalen's Parkstadion, winning a UEFA Cup in his debut season (96-97). Wilmots retired in 2003, to pursuit a political career, but no mather how many political parties he enter, he will always be remeberd as one of Belgium's greats.
