He was one of the first black footballers to play for England, and scored a hat-trick on his first full international match - a 9-0 win over Luxembourg. This made him the first black player ever to score a hat-trick for the national team. He never scored in any other international however, which led tabloid newspapers to dub him ''Luther Missitt''. However Blissett was a crucial part of the Graham Taylor led Watford side that rose up through the lower ranks of English football, to eventually finish in second place behind Liverpool in the 1982-83 championship race. in that championship-chasing season, Blissett scored 27 goals, including four in one game - at home against Sunderland, a match which Watford went on to win 8-0 establishing a club record. That summer saw the surprise move to AC Milan where he was to spend just one season. The stories regarding Blissett's move to Italy are numerous and contradictory, but many suggest that Milan signed the wrong player from England - Milan wanting John Barnes' services and not those of Blissett. He was not as successful as he had been in England, as he scored only 5 goals in 30 appearances. Blissett was sold, at a loss, back to Watford for £550,000 after only one season at the Italian club. However his name has lived on in Italy, though not for any footballing reasons. 'Luther Blissett' has become the name of an Italian anarchist society and is associated with general anti-establishment behaviour. In 1997 four men went on trial in Rome for travelling on a train without tickets. When asked to identify themselves, all said they were 'Luther Blisset' and argued that as a collective identity, they did not need a ticket. Little is known about the individuals involved - other than that they all call themselves ''Luther Blisset'' or 'We are all Luther' Despite being top scorer for in Watford's history his placement of shots were not all that great. He needed at least 3 or 4 chances a match to get a goal and missed a few howlers. He mainly got goals through his good positioning sense, well timed runs and quite impressive physical attributes. _________________ Alan Hansen wrote: How come Liverpool games are on last at the moment?
