As a child, he helped his mother selling greens during the weekend and helped the local priest during the weekend. He was to go working as a mechanic like his father before him when the senior team claimed his participation and then signed his first professional contract at the age of 19. As soon as he got professional, he was spotted by Cruzeiro who then failed to follow their interest and so Luisinho was signed by Atlético Mineiro by 800 000 cruzados (which would be today something about 10400 euros). His lightway style and quickmind way of playing became his image trademark in football. Luizinho always left the pitch with that funny and relaxed look of who's just arriving from a stroll in the park, and who doesn't look that has just been running 90 minutes defending his area. Despite being average strong and kind of slow paced, he showed an immense perception of the game which led to some critics saying he had an antecipation gift. As no other, Luizinho predicted the gameplays and attacked the ball even before the opponents controlled it. He did this with so natural flaw and technique that it seemed that he wasn't putting an effort at all. At the age of 21, he was already considered the best on the country and was summoned to the National Team where he would be always in the starting 11 from 1980 to 1982 By doing this, he made his football look like the simplest game on earth at the crowd's eyes who cherished him for his classic and pompous playing style The World Cup of 1982, in Spain, will always be a unaivodable mark in Luizinho career. Absolute 1st choice of his team, he conquered his country with his precised and aimed plays and was appointed by many as the most true sucessor of Domingos da Guia. But History has a strange way of writing itself and after the elimination of Brasil at the hands of Italia, Luisinho was unfairly accused of ''shitting his paints'' (what curiously had happend too to Domingos da Guia in World Cup of 1938 in a defeat against Italy also), which led to him being withdrawn from the Escrete Canarinho (the Brasilian NT). The fact of being nominated by FIFA for the World Cup best 11 didn't lighten up this position. He still had a comeback in 1983 but he got withdrawn again by Telê Santana until 1986. After this World Cup they got together and shook hands. Telê Santana was moving to Atlético as a coach and Luizinho was appointed captain. Nevertheless he would never be summoned again to Brasilian NT. In 1989 he was sold to Sporting Clube de Portugal (SCP) where he marvelled the crowd with his sumptuos and flawless style. He was adored by the fans and considered one of the best foreigners that passed trough Portugal. His nickname was Beque-Preguiça which means ''The Sleeping Defender'' because he passed most of his time during the pre-match summonings sleeping.
