He played for unfashionable Burnley another in the long line of outstanding wingers Burnley produced, including John Connelly, Willie Morgan, Ralph Coates and Dave Thomas. Some would say the Welshman was arrogant, but he would say confident after one dazzling display after another and after helping Burnley to promotion in the early 70's he began to tear 1st Division defences apart. However by 1975-1976 season he knew Burnley would have to sell him and he joined the champions Derby County. Despite regaining his form Derby were not the force of old and James's career saw him do the rounds at Derby, QPR, Burnley again Sunderland, Bury and Newport. There was however an Indian summer when he joined up with other Welsh Internationals and he briefly flickered back to form under John Toshack as Swansea briefly topped the league. A talented player who would be more well known if he had moved to a bigger club earlier in his career. He scored 66 goals in 337 appearances for Burnley and won 54 Welsh caps, scoring 10 goals.
