He started his playing career in MEMOSZ SE, then he moved on to Bp. Lokomotiv and eventually played for Budapesti Honvéd between 1953 and 1971. He made his NB 1 debute on march 7, 1953 against Salgotarjan. Honvéd’s line-up was Grosics – Rákoczi, Lóránt, Palicskó – Bozsik, Bányai – Budai II, Kocsis S., Machos, Laczi, Czibor. Tichy was a member of the reserve team then, but Jeno Kalmár, the coach of the first team, told the youngster to prepare for the first team’s match. He took the field for Laczi in the 58th minute, when the scores were level at 1:1. Honvéd managed to take the lead with Czibor’s goal and after that the 19-year-old Tichy made it 3:1 for Honvéd by scoring on his debut. Tichy was first called up for international duty for the match against Norway in Oslo. It did not take too long for him to obtain his first international goal by scoring a screamer from the edge of the area. The Hungarian team eventually beat their hosts 5:0. His brilliant playing ability and faboulus goals soon made Tichy a fan- favorite, whom many people went to see in Kispest or in the Népstadion. He won two consecutive championship titles with Honvéd in 1954 and in 1955 and played 320 matches in the red/white shirt, while scoring 247 goals for the team making him 5-times top goalscorer. Playing for Budapesti Honvéd he also won an MNK title in 164 and scored 49 goals in 71 games for the Hungarian National Team between 1955 and 1971, 4 of which he scored in the 1958 World Cup finals in Sweden while obtaining 3 more goals in the next WC finals held in Chile. His last appearance for Honvéd was against Vasas on june 20, 1971 in Kispest, before a crowd of 15000 spectators. The 36-year-old striker was bid farewell to with all due ceremony prior to the kick-off with Honvéd chairman Tibor Sárdy expressing thanks to him. The team’s starting line-up went as follows: Bicskei – Kelemen, Ruzsinszki, Szucs L., Molnár – Pál, Kocsis L., Pintér – Pusztai, Tichy, Kozma. Tichy continued his tradition of scoring on his landmark matches when in the 45th minute he scored with a left-foot volley. The match ended a 1:1 draw with Antal equalizing for Vasas. Tichy started his non-playing career coaching the youth and later the reserve teams of Honvéd until he became the team’s lead-coach in 1976, remaining in this position for 6 years. With Tichy in charge Honvéd acquired their first championship title in 25 years by winning the 1979/80 season. The team eventually claimed the title after 32 rounds with a 5:2 victory against Volán the line-up having been: Menyhárt – Paróczai, Kocsis I., Lukács, Varga – Dajka (Gyimesi), Nagy A., Garaba – Bodonyi, Esterházy (Weimper), Kozma. In 1992 Tichy became the freeman of the district of Kispest. The „Nation’s Bomber” died on january 6, 1999 in Budapest.
