Sympathic Vilfort was at the time troubled with problems in his private life as his daughter suffered from cancer and he had already taken the opportunity to travel across the sea in order to see his child while being the middle of the competition. He was probably the one player which the public most wanted to see scoring this goal to sent the trophy to Denmark. Which he did. Apart from this distinguished moment in a fine career, Vilfort did relatively well for the rest of his time in the national team kit, reaching an impressive 77 caps from 1986 to 1998 and scoring an equally admirably tally of 14 goals in the process. Apart from EURO '92, he also took part in the European Championships of 1988 and 1996, but he sadly never got to play in a World Cup due to Denmark's lack of succes in reaching this stage in 1990 and 1994. But besides being a devoted and trusted lieutenant with Denmark through twelve years, Vilfort is of course mostly heralded for being one of Brøndby IF's true greats through the club's history, notching up a mighty tally of 470 league games with 78 goals to follow. Arriving in 1986 after a brief stay in Lille, France, Vilfort through the years developed into a well-respected, tireless and extremely popular captain of the squad. With him at the wheels, Brøndby managered to conquer three consecutive league titles from 1996 to 1998 after a trophy draught following the club's near-bankrupt period in the beginning of the decade. Apart from being a leader of men and a towering presence in the field, Vilfort also had, as the presented statistics suggest, a knack of scoring goals from his central midfield position. Originally a wily centre forward with Danish outlets FREM, he carried on his ability to run in and find space in the box despite being moved down the centre-axis of the field. Vilfort finished his career in 1998, rounding things off with a splending flying header to succesfully finish Brøndby's third league title in a row, and will rightfully be remembered as one of the club's greatest ever players. True to form, supporters have dubbed Brøndby Stadion as ''Vilfort Park'' in honour of his outstanding contribution. Now Vilfort is head of the talent department at Brøndby where his son, Mikkel, also is starting to make a name for himself. Albeit as a goalkeeper! _________________ Don't know when and if I will be back...
