This ancient FC Porto forward was one of the players who were involved in returning the club to the Portuguese title at the end of the'70s. Duda was not the typical forward that played fixed in the area. The Brazilian had a tendency to play on the wings, and allied a good heading game to a powerful kick, and could finish with some ease. He was an brave FW! Duda came to Portugal, coming from Recife (Brazil), to play in Vit. Setúbal. In his 1st season at the Victorian side in 1971/72, as national championship runner-up with José Maria Pedroto. In Setúbal, he played alongside the mythic figures of Victoria: Carlos Cardoso, Octávio Machado, Matine, José Torres, Arcanjo and Jacinto joão, among others. During his stay in Bonfim, he was the best scorer of the national championship in Victoria for 3 consecutive times: in 1972/73, in 1973/74 (scored 24 goals and was only exceeded by sportinguista Yazalde) and in 1974/75. Before coming to FC Porto, Duda still accounted for Sevilla. However, his performance in Spain never matched the level it reached in the service of Victoria, returning to Portugal the following year to play in FC Porto. In his 1st season of blue-and-white, in 1976/77, he won the Cup of Portugal and was the second best scorer of the team in the national championship with 11 goals (ex aequo with António Oliveira and behind Fernando Gomes). In the following two years, he would be even more predominant in the two times champion that FC Porto won with José Maria Pedroto. In these two years, Duda was with Fernando Gomes, António Oliveira and Seninho, one of the forwards most used by the 'master' José Maria Pedroto. In the national championship in 1977/78, the four marked 60 goals together! However, despite having been instrumental in FC Porto's return to the titles, Duda continues to be remembered for two dreamy nights in the European competitions. The FC Porto Forward was the protagonist in two European rounds that FC Porto disputed during that period, one against Manchester United in the UEFA Cup winners Cup in 1977/78, and another one facing AC Milan in the European Champions Cup of 1979/80. In the Cup Winners Cup in 1977/78, FC Porto, after eliminating 1FC Koln, Porto faced Manchester United in the 2nd round. In the 1st hand, a victory by 4-0 (Duda to 8 ', Duda to 24', Duda to 54 'and the Oliveira 60') surprised the English and European football. A 'hat-trick' of Duda and a goal from Antonio Oliveira left the United virtually outside the Quarter-final. After the 4-0 win at Antas, they managed to resiste Man. Utd. at Old Trafford (defeat by 5-2) and moved on. The other great moment in European competitions for Duda was saved for the San Siro Stadium. After a 0-0 in the 1st hand, Duda scored the winning goal to the notorious Albertosi, eliminating the Italians from the European Champions Cup in 1979/80. The champions AC Milan, led by the charismatic Nils Liedholm and Franco Baresi, Walter Novellino, Gianni Rivera, Fabio Capello and Albertino Bigon, among others, in the squad, fell at the feet of FC Porto coached by Jose Maria Pedroto, in what was our first victory in that mythical stadium. ''Today we shook for FC Porto in European aura'', were the first words of José Maria Pedroto after eliminating the Italians. After that, Duda still played one more season at FC Porto, ultimately leaving the Antas in 1980/81 (participated in only 10 games), at a time when FC Porto was led by the Austrian Hermann Stessl. Duda was a fabulous player. He was also a scorer of fantastic free kicks, and combined well with António Oliveira. _________________ ''My heart only has one colour: Blue and White!! João D.
