He was a member of the Dutch team that won the European title at the 1988 European Football Championship in West Germany. Nicknamed ''Bossie'', he started his professional career with Ajax Amsterdam (1983-88), then moved to KV Mechelen (1988-90), PSV Eindhoven (1990-91), Anderlecht (1991-96), and FC Twente (1996-99).
