McGovern is most famous for being part of the Nottingham Forest side that won the European Cup twice, under the management of Brian Clough. At the age of 19 he became the youngest player to play in all four divisions of the Football League and during his playing career he won promotion with Hartlepool United, Derby County and Nottingham Forest. He also won two Scottish U23 caps, and was to go on a play over 500 league games during his career. He forged a long-lasting relationship with manager, Brian Clough, and assistant-manager, Peter Taylor, at both Derby County and Nottingham Forest, who recognised his footballing ability, despite his missing a muscle in his back. After winning a League Championship medal at Derby County, and then a brief spell at Leeds United, John went on to be Captain of Nottingham Forest where he won the League Championship again along with two League Cups and two European Cups.
