This unfair expectation for a hard-nut and pretty strictly defensive midfielder to suddenly start banging them in was of course made on behalf of Jensen's rocket shot in the EURO '92 final against Germany which did actually find the net as the Danes ran out sensational winners. The rumour has it as the by and large only reason that George Graham afterwards went out and bought this thought-to-be free scoring midfielder. Back in Denmark, he enjoyed a long and loving relationsship with Brøndby IF whom he started out his career with, playing for the club three times between stints with first Hamburger SV, returning home in 1990, and then Highbury and Arsenal in 1992 on the back of his success in the European Championship. When he once again came back to Denmark in 1996, he was from then on through his experience and title as European champion virtually acting as a secondary captain with midfield 'twin partner', Kim Vilfort, being the nominal skipper of the squad. Jensen was also a mainstay with the Danish national team from the start of the 90's and up to EURO '96 where he afterwards retired from international football. His claim to fame was of course that scorcher against Germany (afterwards showing off his oratorical skill by exclaiming ''I hit it right in the arse!'') while he also has managed to win no less than 11 Danish championships, nine of them as a player with Brøndby IF, one as a playing coach with Herfølge BK and finally another championship with Brøndby in 2004/2005, acting as assistant manager under Michael Laudrup. Curiously enough, Brøndby IF hasn't yet managed to win a championship without the involvement of John Jensen. Despite his outspoken problems of actually hitting the opposition goal, it goes to his credit that he was a consistent defensive midfielder with quite predictable qualities such as good stamina, strength and the occasional eye for a defense splitting pass. Especially his tenacity was what won him an impressive number of 69 caps, all of them coming under Richard Møller Nielsen, a coach infamous and often critisised for his defensive tactics and overwhelming affection for players of Jensen's combative however not-so-flashy ilk. Today, after travelling to Getafe as Michael Laudrup's assistance, John Jensen finds himself coaching a team by himself in Danish football's top flight where he is in charge of Randers FC. _________________ I am probably not going to be on this forum very much anymore - but send me a PM if you have any requst or enquiry and I will be notified.
