Placed behind a midfield packed with offensive creativity and width, it was Bertelsen's primary job, as a predecessor to Claude Makelélé, to compensate for his team mate's lack of defensive prowess by safely sowing the holes in midfield together. His importance was often obscured by an ignorant and football-romantic Danish press who would rather want to see Jan Mølby's gifted passing skills on the defensive midfield instead of Bertelsen's phenomenal positioning and dedicated labour, which was arguably more important in a side with such an emphasy on players with attacking skills. But in latter years, with the forth-coming of a wealth of Danish litterature with focus on the Dynamite team, become imminent that Bertelsen's importance to the side should never have been ignored. Many of his old team mates have as such declared him as the perhaps most vital asset to the team's succes in those years: Quote: Søren Lerby was always out on the left side of the midfield and never came into the middle where he wanted to be the most. Even a player with a brilliant career in Ajax, Bayern Munich, Monaco and PSV Eindhoven could not conquer that spot. It was taken by Jens Jørn Bertelsen, a hard-working midfielder, who never lost a ball. He was the exception [among the players] who had played for different teams in Denmark, Belgium and France but never one of the leading sides. Nevertheless he was a man who Denmark couldn't afford to be without. -- Jan Mølby on Jens Jørn Bertelsen in the biography, ''Jan the Man''. _________________ I am probably not going to be on this forum very much anymore - but send me a PM if you have any requst or enquiry and I will be notified.
